Women’s Bali Full Moon RETREAT

AUGUST 15-23, 2024

In this nine day retreat, we take advantage of twice daily practice in a traditional Balinese setting overlooking the rice fields and in view of Gunung Agung. Delicious organic food, nature hikes, sacred water immersion, temple blessings, cultural tours and performances, exploration of Balinese textiles and handicrafts, and plenty of relaxation compliment our daily Silat practices.

NATURE & Breathing INTENSIVE

In this workshop we take advantage of Marin's abundant natural beauty. We hike into nature and then take time to employ our breathing exercises while surrounded by nature's majesty. Students have the opportunity to play with their natural gait on the trail, integrating the variety of silat "walks" we practice in the studio. Connections are made between the internal and the external. We explore the breath, the Silat breathing movements, and the experience of qi.

Early Morning Fire Breathing Practice We touch on some standing breathing practices to establish the basics, then learn the more advanced, sitting Fire Breathing, a rarely shared breathing movement. Between breathing sets, we explore the Meridian Stretches for a full system activating experience. A short silent meditation ends practice. Class takes place outdoors in the early morning and hopefully in view of rising sun!

Rising Sun Gayatri Mantra Mala The Gayatri Mantra is an ancient mantra for the rising Sun - attuning us to the cultivation of Light, both within and without. It is considered one of the most ancient, most important, and most powerful Vedic mantras. We learn the basics of pronunciation and how to use a mala. Accompanied by harmonium, we then chant the Gayatri Mantra 108 times. Class takes place outdoors in the early morning and hopefully in view of rising sun!

The Wind Movement Stoke your ease internally with the short Wind form. The Wind leaves us with a sense of tranquility and relaxation. We’ll do a short warm up and then dive into the practice of the form. Students get a taste for White Crane Silat form work while learning to articulate the wrists and hands with flow and precision. This form is in the Yin Style and often given as a medicinal somatic metaphor for empowering changes of direction with ease.

Falling...and getting back up Falling and getting back up is perhaps the definitive metaphor for resilience. We’ll explore a progression of strengthening movements from White Crane Silat that culminate in a fun and safe falling and rolling back up experience.

Making Friends with the Floor (Snake System Conditioning) What to do after you’ve fallen? Is it the end of play, or? We’ll explore rolling, sweeping, sliding, gliding, kicking and other energetic and empowering possibilities from the White Crane Silat Snake System - all from the comfort and safety of the floor. Students explore a novel vocabulary of movement and take away new sensations of internal engagement.

Lightness and Grounding (Crane System Conditioning) With barefoot jumping, sliding footwork and breathing exercises from White Crane Silat’s Crane System, students gain the physical experience of how to ground themselves… and in contrast, how to lighten up! We internalize the dynamic relationship between these two contrasting but complimentary energies and experience how movement informs our mental/energetic states. Participants come away empowered with tools for managing the energy-mind-body, and the overall experience that managing the energy mind-body is possible. We begin and end class with the breath.

Somatic Foundations for Harmony We open the class with breath and vibration. We proceed with a series of fundamental floor exercises from White Crane Silat which specifically benefit women. We rise in a new way to flow into a series of kicks and standing movements that compliment and balance the foundation we lay on the floor. Throughout practice we are reminded of the breath and the mudra/somatic metaphor.
